Kentish Town Youth Project (KTYP) Update

Hello, Kentish Towners!

The clocks have gone back, the cold weather has kicked in and the run up to Christmas is on. Happily, our Youth Project continues at full pace. We thought we’d just take a moment to let you know what we’ve been up to lately.

KTYP has had a great half term, providing a host of activities for young people. We were especially happy to work with Go Further Cycling, who facilitated our cycle ride around Epping Forest. The young people got a lot out of the trip, and it was great to get out of the city for an afternoon of greenery and exercise.

We also paid a visit to the London Dungeons. As well as being good, gory fun, the dungeons are also a valuable insight into London’s history. We were given vivid insight into some of The Capital’s most notorious events, including the Gunpowder Plot, the plague epidemic, and the Jack the Ripper Murders. Very wholesome stuff. We’re pleased to say all the young people made it back in one piece.

Back in term time, KTYP is providing a full range of on-going activities, including our increasingly popular circus skills workshops, put on by Mariana Sastre from the Camden Roundhouse Theatre.

Our sessions offer something for everyone, and we’re always glad to welcome new young people!

All the best, KTYP

We're happy to announce that KTCC is now a  London Living Wage (LLW) employer.

London is an expensive place to live. Rising rental and transport costs are just two of the factors making things very difficult for those on standard, minimum wage. The LLW is designed to address this. Paid voluntarily by employers across the capital, the LLW is based on London's cost of living, guaranteeing its recipients a basic income of £10.20 an hour - well over the standard UK rate of £8.75.

The societal benefits of LLW are huge, helping to create a fairer rate of pay and better quality of life for all Londoners. KTCC is proud to support its employees through this important scheme.

This year, we’ve been working closely with Torriano Junior School to provide a free, dedicated kids’ Summer Camp.

Run over three weeks, the camp gave children from Torriano School the chance to paint, draw, make, play and create, with activities ranging from bag design to table tennis. Attendance was strong, and we got a great response from all who came along!

The sessions were run by Teaching Assistants from Torriano School. Their familiar faces allowed less confident children to open up and build self-esteem interacting with their peers. We are very grateful to Catriona Hayes and her team!

Thanks to our friends at Kitchen Social, we were also able to provide free, daily lunches for all the children who attended. Kitchen Social is a project funded by the Mayor of London, launched to reduce hunger during the school holidays. It is specifically designed to help families who would otherwise receive free school meals, during what can be a difficult time. This was invaluable to us, allowing greater outreach into the local community.

We were very grateful to Raju Mehrab, a young chef and upcoming food business owner from Kentish Town, for making our free lunches through Kitchen Social. Raju told us: “My Kitchen Social experience showed me how we could go about providing tasty and healthy food to the local children. It was clear [local parents] were pleased as it gave their kids a chance to spend more time out of the house and interact with different children.” You can find out more about Raju's food here.

One local Mother told us, “I just wanted to thank you for organising Torriano play group which has been a real godsend for my family… To have a safe playgroup that is part of the community and involved with the local school where the children know each other is really important.”

Thanks to Kitchen Social, we will be able to fund free meals for all our school holiday projects for the next two years.
